Finally! Wole Soyinka’s Book “Ake” Made Into Film Released On Amazon

The film adaptation of Wole Soyinka’s classic childhood memoir, Ake: The Years of Childhood is now available on Amazon and other online platforms. The director of the movie, Dapo Adeniyi, made this known to our correspondent on Thursday.

Set during World War II years, the story combines a beautiful child-view narrative with resonances from the war as heard and imagined in Soyinka’s hometown in Ake, Abeokuta. It climaxes with the Egba women’s riot of 1945, led by Mrs FunmilayoRansome-Kuti, mother of the deceased musician Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

Shot at various locations in Abeokuta, Ibadan, Lagos and East Grinstead, UK, the film has been screened in Lagos and at film festivals in Cannes, France and the United States. The French subtitles were contributed by Alliance Francaise in Nigeria.

Produced by Back Page Productions, the film featured a cast of nearly 1,000 actors and actresses, including some of Nigeria’s foremost professionals in the film and theatre industries, such as Taiwo Ajayi-Lycett, Yinka Davies, Yeni-Anikulapo-Kuti, Jimi Solanke, LanikeOnimisi-Bennet, Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, Alex Bratt, Gbenga Ajiboye, Hafiz Oyetoro, Yemi Solade, Wale Ramon, Wale Adebayo, Toyin Abiodun, Bose Oladele, Joke Muyiwa, Samsideen Adesiyan and Bayo Bankole.

Adeniyi, who has produced for radio and television in Nigeria, as well as for the British Broadcasting Corporation, described Soyinka’s account as such an important historical script because of its portrayal of a world in turmoil – the Second World War and colonial rule in Nigeria which was pressured by agitation for independence.

He said, “Echoes from the war were heard distinctly in Abeokuta by its enlightened communities on rediffusion radio, the headmaster of the local mission school inclusive, who was the writer’s father.

“Ake is not an overt historical account but one which relays a crucial chapter in Nigerian history from the eye-witness of a child. The Egba women’s riot, directed by Mrs Kuti, Soyinka’s aunt, was conceived and hatched under his eyes. His mother Eniola, participated as one of the closest collaborators with Kuti in the women’s movement.

“The movie valiantly overcomes the usual production challenges in the recreation of film scenery and props, period automobiles and architecture of a bygone era.” Punch

Cristiano Ronaldo was shown a straight red card in Juventus’ Champions League clash with Valencia

The Portugal international was shown a straight red card for the incident in the 29th minute of the group game

Cristiano Ronaldo was shown a straight red card in Juventus’ Champions League clash with Valencia on Wednesday.

It was the Portugal international’s first European match for the Italian giants following his £105million summer move from Real Madrid.

All eyes were on Ronaldo to see how he’d perform on the biggest stage in football, given the fact he’s won the competition five times previously.

But Ronaldo’s night will be remembered for all the wrong reasons after he was sent off in just the 29th minute for a coming together with Jeison Murillo.

It wasn’t clear what had happened at first as the incident occurred off the ball.

Cristiano Ronaldo was shown a straight red card in Juventus’ clash with Valencia
There was a slight coming together between the two players, but Ronaldo didn’t appear to lash out at his rival with his hand or head.

He did however appear to pull the hair of Murillo, which was spotted by the linesman.

The official gestured to the referee to end Ronaldo’s night early, and the Portugal international was forced to leave the pitch in tears.

Nigerian Police uncovers ritual shrine used by cultists and ritualists in Osun State

The Osun State Police Command Wednesday paraded two people suspected to be ritualists who specialize in duping and defrauding unsuspecting members of the public under the pretence of being herbalists. The two suspects paraded by the state commissioner of police, Mr Fimihan Adeoye at the Force headquarters, Osogbo are Yusuf Taofeek, aged 21 and Jimoh Sherif, 20.

Fimihan said the suspects were arrested on 6th October, 2017, upon tip-off by some vigilant residents of Jamodo junction, Ifon-Osun, where their shrine was uncovered by the police. He said it was revealed to Police Operatives that some cultists /ritualists with code name “ZONE II” (Two) at Jamodo junction, Ifon-Osun, headed by one Sehidu Aliu, also known as ‘Alaga’ who is presently at large, usually assemble at their den.

He said they brandish guns and cutlasses before their victims. It was disclosed that most of the victims were those who patronised them for money rituals.

According to the CP,“the syndicates specialise in duping and defrauding unsuspecting members of the public under the pretence of being herbalist and to make money rituals for them.”

Drunk Prostitude Forces 15- Year Old To Have Sex With Her, Bashes Him For Failing To Pay $5

A 33-YEAR-OLD Zvishavane se_x worker has been dragged to court for allegedly forcing a 15-year-old boy to have se_x with her and assaulting him for failing to pay $5 for services rendered.

Litah Chivovoro (33) of Council-park Zvishavane appeared before Regional Magistrate Morgan Nemadire facing charges of indecent assault and having se_xual intercourse with a minor.

She pleaded guilty and was remanded in custody to September 28.

“I admit to the charges and I am sorry. I only needed money to take home. However, the boy had refused to pay me after I gave him the service. I got angry since I was drunk and failed to control myself hence I assaulted him.’’

The court heard that on August 27 at Mberengwa Business Centre, Chivovoro met the complainant and lured him from a motor vehicle he was seated in.

It is alleged that Chivovoro dragged him to her house and forcibly slept with him. She demanded money from him after the act. She went on to assault the boy until he paid up.

The case was reported to the police leading to her arrest.

Mrs Faith Mwale represented the State.

Christiano Ronaldo Off The Mark With A Brace, Costa Dismissed For Spitting

MILAN: Cristiano Ronaldo broke his Juventus duck in his fourth game when he scored a brace on Sunday to give them a 2-1 win over Sassuolo in Serie A, although the Turin side’s day was marred by a red card for Douglas Costa for spitting at an opponent.

The five-times world player of the year opened his account in the easiest possible fashion by tapping into an empty net from less than two metres in the 50th minute.

The Portuguese added another in the 65th minute when he finished off a counter-attack by drilling a low-angled shot beyond Andrea Consigli and into the far corner with his left foot.

After Ronaldo missed two good chances for a hat-trick, Khouma Babacar headed one back in the 90th minute but could not prevent Sassuolo from falling to their first defeat of the season.

Costa became involved in a running feud with Sassuolo midfielder Federico Di Francesco.

The Brazilian escaped with a booking for elbowing and then head-butting his rival as they tangled before the Sassuolo goal but was then sent off after video cameras caught him spitting at the same player in another altercation.

Juventus, chasing an eighth successive Serie A title, have 12 points, three ahead of Napoli. Earlier, AS Roma squandered a two-goal lead when they were held 2-2 at home by lowly Chievo.
