*As Princewill assured EU EOM officials of his readiness to partner with them*
Amb. Binebai Yerin Princewill, the publisher/Editor-In-Chief of the Liberator Newspaper worldwide, one of the most fastest growing authentic media outfit in Nigeria received a delegation from the European Union, EU yesterday in Warri.
The delegation landed Nigeria under the auspices of European Union Election Observation Mission, charged with the mandate to observe the 2019 general elections in Nigeria.
The EU EOM team include Mr Eckart Rodah; Mrs Martina Gious and Emmanuel Orji, Assistant to the EU on election in Nigeria.
In giving a breakdown of their visit to Nigeria and The Liberator Newspaper, Martina had stated that “The EU deploys election observation missions around the world to provide support for the development of countries’ democratic institutions and to assist partner countries in their commitment to holding elections in line with their international and regional commitments and obligations.
” The EU EOM operates in accordance with the ‘Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation’ adopted at the United Nations in 2005 by a number of international bodies involved in election observation. International election observation, says the Declaration of Principles, ” “assesses election processes in accordance with international principles for genuine democratic elections and domestic law, while recognizing that it is the people of a country who ultimately determine credibility and legitimacy of an election process”.
However, some other issues discussed extensively include the Nigerian Media, the judiciary, INEC, the political environment, Niger Delta and security challenges in the region.
According to Mr. Eckart, the European Union Election Observation Mission, have currently deployed officials to all parts of the country as their team is in charge of Edo and Delta states.
The EU officials will observe and assess the following ” The legal framework and its implementation; The work of the election administration; Campaign activities of candidates and political parties; The role of state institutions and civil society; The conduct of the media; The overall environment of the elections, including respect for fundamental freedoms, civil and political rights; Election days, including voting, counting and the tabulation of results; The complaints and appeals process.
Meanwhile, after an hour critical deliberation with the officials, Amb. Binebai Yerin Princewill, publisher of the Liberator Newspaper Worldwide had assured the EU delegation of the newspaper’s readiness to partner with them.
Others present during the closed door hour deliberation include Pst. Philip Fianka; Mss Happy Modeh, secretary of the Liberator Newspaper and Barr. Ukpa Nneamaka.
