In their bids to complement the efforts of Nigerian Police Force and other security agents to ensure peace, law and order in the rural areas, the Burutu Aquatic Vigilante group of Nigeria has called on President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government to provide modern security firearms for the organization to effectively fight against crime, oil theft and illegal bunkering in the creeks of Niger-Delta.
The group while reacting to newsmen at NPA Warri early hour of today, also appeal for monthly allowances from Federal Government for upkeep in order to motivate them for efficient service delivery in carrying out their task.
Speaking to MainNews, the Vigilante Commander in Burutu Local Government Area Division of Delta State, Mr.Whiteman Oyakemefeyegha said, the organization started operation voluntarily since 2014 without Arms and logistics from the government.”
Since then, they assisted the Police in maintaining law and order to reduce crime, protect lives and properties in riverine communities. They have arrested over one thousand suspected criminals comprising of oil thefts, illegal bunkers, Sea pirates, Armed robbers, militants, secret cult groups and hand over to the police. They were also work to provide intelligent information to the police, Mr. Whiteman stated.
The group lamented that since 2014 to date, they are not yet empowered with weapons by government to effectively combat crime in the rural areas. They further stressed that majority of illegal oil bunkers are using suffocated firearms, such as Pump Action Guns, Double Barrels, Riffles, 200horse Power Engine Boats e.t.c. to carry out their nefarious activities which most at times exposed their members to hazards and sustained various degree of injury.
However, the group draw the attention of the Commandant General of Nigeria Vigilante, Mr.Usman Muhammad Jahun, the Delta State Commander, Mr.Monday Waziri and his Bayelsa State counterpart, Mr.Jonathan Tolumobofa to as a matter of urgency urged President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the Vigilante Bill into law, so as to constitutionally back them for effective operation in Nigeria.
In addition, the group demands Federal government for the provision of 3 Double 300horse Power Engine Boats, 2 Hulux Vehicles, AK47 Riffles and Ammunitions with monthly allowance, so as to enhance their operations in combating crimes efficiently at the creeks of Niger-Delta oil rich region.
