The body known as Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has threatened to embark upon another strike, thereby crippling any academic activities within member public institutions.

ASUU accused the Federal Government of not keeping to her own side of the bargain concerning the 2019 Memorandum of Action.

The ASUU National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi made the statement known in Abuja.

According to him “The current leadership of the government team clearly lacks the academic disposition and humility needed to undertake”the task of negotiation with the body for a better learning environment.

However,“Since information on the amounts mentioned in the media went round, the ASUU has been inundated with enquiries on the union’s perspective to the story.

“Funding for the revitalisation of public universities has for years been of very high priority to ASUU.

“Reaching an agreement with the Federal Government has often been a frustrating journey for our union. It is often marked with protests, strikes and requires a conscious and focused engagement. The 2001 agreement, which gave birth to the 2009 agreement, was not an exemption. The exception here is the personality leading the government negotiation team.

“The current leadership of the government team clearly lacks the academic disposition and humility needed to undertake such task.

“Our members enjoy their work and hate to see any disruption in the smooth running of our universities. However, the level of frustration occasioned by the lackadaisical attitude of the government towards meeting the terms of the 2019 Memorandum of Action that was freely signed with our union is increasingly becoming unbearable.

“We, therefore, call on all Nigerian patriots, parents and students including the Nigeria Labour Congress to prevail on the government to keep to the terms of our agreement. Otherwise, our union should not be held responsible for any disruption in the system.”

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele says CBN in the next five years, will aggressively pursue policies that will further diversify the Nigerian economy.

This was reveals in a statement where Emefiele confirmed in an interview with newsmen on Friday in Nsukka, Enugu State, after a Special Convocation of the University of Nigeria (UNN), where he was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Business Administration.

The pledge was coming after the Nigeria Senate, on Thursday confirmed Mr. Godwin Emefiele for a second term in office as CBN Governor, starting June 3.

The Boss said the CBN in the next phase of his administration would consolidate on already existing policies. According to him “Nigeria belongs to all of us and we have a role to play to make sure things get better.

“I will also emphasise that Nigerian policy makers are good at developing policies, but the biggest challenge of the Nigerian economic policy is that people try circumventing policies.

“By given this opportunity now, we will make it very difficult for people to circumvent economic policies.

“However we must learn to respect our policies. If you don’t respect the economic policies of this country, and you fall short of our economic policies as an economic saboteur, you will be dealt with,” he said.

SPORT NEWS!!! FIFA Scraps Plans For 48 Team In 2022 World Cup, Qater

Football’s world governing body announced on Wednesday, that FIFA has given up on its efforts to expand the 2022 World Cup to 48 teams.

“The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 will therefore remain as originally planned with 32 teams and no proposal will be submitted at the next FIFA Congress on 5 June,” a FIFA statement read on Thursday.

“FIFA had been exploring if logistical and political complexities could be overcome to expand the tournament from 32 to 48 teams, which would have required at least one more country being used in the Persian Gulf to accommodate an additional 16 matches in the region”

However, a FIFA internal report had already concluded that the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia could not join as co-hosts unless they restore the economic and travel ties with Qatar that were severed two years ago.

So therefore, that means the World Cup will not be expanded until 2026, with FIFA already having approved a format with 48 teams for that tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Corruption: Groups Charges Governor Okowa To Jettison Reconstitution Of Interim Board In DESOPADEC

By Francis Tayor

*….Says DESOPADEC Should Be Restructured Along Ethnic Line To Restore Its Foundational Objective*

A Niger Delta Anti-Corruption and Human Rights Groups under the aegis of Center for Public Complain, (CPC) led by Comrade Ezekiel Kagbala in collaboration with Ijaw Peoples Development Initiative,(IPDI) led by Comrade Austin Ozobo has called on Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State to resist and jettison any internal and external influence to manage the affairs of the Delta State Oil Producing area Development Commission, DESOPADEC with interim or new board, adding that the commission should be restructured along ethnic lines to restore its foundational objectives.

This was revealed, Speaking with journalist in Warri, the biggest commercial city in Delta State, the covener Center For Public Complain CPC, Comrade Kagbala noted that, laws establishing government agencies in Nigeria could be subjected to review and amended for efficacy and serve the people.

He however stresses that, laws establishing DESOPADEC should be reviewed to accommodate the interest of host communities, non oil producing communities in the coastal region of the state as non oil producing community provides access to oil producing communities.

According to Kagbala, “Presiding over ailing commission gloated in awarding contracts to selected politcians within a political party, board members and loyalist is corruption.

He reiterated that line of corruption will tear down the intervention agency because turning blind eye to open and hidden impunity perpetrated by political family members, friend and loyalist does not portend good governance at any level, neither will it satisfy power and contract hungry politcians who feed on administrative imbalances”.

“Our dear governor should do the right thing confidently and righteously,DESOPADEC should be reorganized into ethnic development agency so that non oil producing communities that give access to oil producing communities could attain some level of development.

The anti-curruptin activist further reminded governor Okowa that the commission was established out of an act passed by the Delta State House of Assembly in 2006 under the administration of chief James Onanefe Ibori to serve as an intervention agency and was given the Mandate to alleviate the sufferings of the people with special focus on host communities”.

“Presently the commission could only boast of substandard, abandoned projects with its commissioners and board members gloting in politics, contract hustling as if their day of reckoning will never come.

It could be recalled that governor Okowa personally approved the Dissolution of DESOPADEC in July,2015 and that dissolution took immediate effect. The board constituted afterward is now set to exit the stage with less satisfactory result as the system was so opaque marred with allegations of financial recklessness and misappropriation.

“It is a sincere appeal to our dynamic and dependable governor, His Excellency, Sen. Dr.Ifeanyi Okowa to use the instrument of power to create Coastal Area Development Agency(CADA) and dissolve the current system of things in DESOPADEC. We pray and hope that our governor is already considering our appeal, the group stated”.
