The body known as Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has threatened to embark upon another strike, thereby crippling any academic activities within member public institutions.

ASUU accused the Federal Government of not keeping to her own side of the bargain concerning the 2019 Memorandum of Action.

The ASUU National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi made the statement known in Abuja.

According to him “The current leadership of the government team clearly lacks the academic disposition and humility needed to undertake”the task of negotiation with the body for a better learning environment.

However,“Since information on the amounts mentioned in the media went round, the ASUU has been inundated with enquiries on the union’s perspective to the story.

“Funding for the revitalisation of public universities has for years been of very high priority to ASUU.

“Reaching an agreement with the Federal Government has often been a frustrating journey for our union. It is often marked with protests, strikes and requires a conscious and focused engagement. The 2001 agreement, which gave birth to the 2009 agreement, was not an exemption. The exception here is the personality leading the government negotiation team.

“The current leadership of the government team clearly lacks the academic disposition and humility needed to undertake such task.

“Our members enjoy their work and hate to see any disruption in the smooth running of our universities. However, the level of frustration occasioned by the lackadaisical attitude of the government towards meeting the terms of the 2019 Memorandum of Action that was freely signed with our union is increasingly becoming unbearable.

“We, therefore, call on all Nigerian patriots, parents and students including the Nigeria Labour Congress to prevail on the government to keep to the terms of our agreement. Otherwise, our union should not be held responsible for any disruption in the system.”

The TSO observed lately that some amorphous groups have made it their pastime to denigrate the person of His Excellency, Chief Timipre Marlyn Sylva, at every turn on the social media, in the guise of campaigning for aspirants.

This was made known to MainNews, that whether those amorphous group, either they are calling on sylva to withdraw or casting aspersions on him without provocation.

The TSO opined that they viewed these amorphous acts as manifestations of the grand plan to airbrush Sylva out of Bayelsa politics. So therefore, they wish to sound it loud and clear that Sylva, being a democrat by nature, would not play his political games undemocratically.

According to there words, “Sylva entire political career, spanning decades, he has kept faith with democratic ideals, and would not now resort to strange tendencies to actualize his political pursuits”. Whereas they believe that it would do much good to such groups and their sponsors to be informed that “Sylva has no intention of stopping any APC member from joining the governorship contest”.

As a support group, “We in the TSO also will not engage in or encourage our members to indulge in smear campaigns against respectable leaders of our party”.

Thus, they expect other support groups and interested aspirants in the governorship primary to reciprocate by respecting His Excellency, Chief Timipre Marlyn Sylva’s constitutional right and freedom to contest, if he so wishes.

The group warned that the sponsored campaigns of calumny against Sylva must stop. In accordingly, they must harness their collective efforts to build strength and organize a primary that would be the cynosure of all other parties.

However, the TSO believe that all the time and energies mobilized at denigrating Sylva would be more beneficial to the APC if they are rather channeled to the course of building party cohesion and understanding, because the object before them is the only one they can achieve in unity”.
